"President Carter will be staying here so we have to prepare and the
family will be staying at a hotel," said Mrs. B. I just came home
from a tough day at Mt. Gallitzin Academy and was being scurried along
to put away my school things. I kind knew something was up when one of
my father's secretaries picked me up from school. And the workmen
outside were the ones I would see quarterly or when Frank would need
help beyond his every day duties and Mrs. B had the same women I would
only see at the house quarterly and for special occasions.
Allot
of the whirlwind was subdued when at the dinner table the next evening
my father announced that President Carter would be staying at a
client's house in Fox Chappel. I knew the house of Mr. Abbott. My
father brought my sister, Maureen, and me along one day. It was like a
castle - Like a Newport, RI mansion or something. I recall being
escorted to the billiard room by an employee in an authentic French
Maids uniform where I Maureen and I were introduced to Mr. Abbott's
daughter - who turned out to be a delight. She was a little older
than me and I tried to keep up w/ her at pool and from then on enjoyed
the game.
Yes,
my father, they low-key, modest, brilliant attorney w/ the best of
ethics and a great mind for business - always thinking - always
putting things together. I knew my father was something special by the
way other people treated him and, in addition, treated my family and
me.
Now I
see how things he did like his legal involvement in the Ruby Case –
wanting to go for “Patriotic Insanity” – and he creating the first
morbidity based health risk assessment along w/ the good help of Dr.
James F. Fries of Stanford University School of Medicine and leading
health promotion expert and author of Taking Care of Yourself (which
sold millions world-wide and was, for a while, the Bible of worksite,
self, health education - And HealthTrac and LifeStyle Directions,
Inc. both owned by my father and pioneers in the industry from the
early eighties on – C. Everett Koop even being part of Dr. Fries’
publishing circle on the validity and efficacy of the HRA system) -
All these things were advanced, out of the ordinary and for his
family.
