Sonni Abatta – KDKA Pittsburgh Morning News

At first I wasn’t going to add any of the local media from the city I choose to call home, Pittsburgh, Pa. However, watching Sonni Abatta in the morning has become part of my everyday.

Sonni is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University. She gives a solid delivery and as she develops as a morning anchor, appears to be learning that it’s okay to incorporate laughter and a little banter with your co-anchors while delivering the news. In fact, I credit Sonni to helping coax her colleagues in being more dynamic and engaging in their delivery and less robotic. KDKA has a long standing tradition. However, it’s 2007 and things have changed in the world and surely within media. A lot of local news has that look and feel of just local news – which seems to project the attitude of, “this is how we’ve been doing it for years and by damn’ this is the way we’re going to keep doing it.” It would be nice for local news to transform itself a bit and stray from the old wing tip shoe. KDKA was a leader in the history of radio and televised news and I expect nothing less of it today – in there here and now. Pittsburgh personalities such as Sonni bring hope.

When I think of the players of everyday media that make me think of phrases like “a breath of fresh air,” and “refreshing” and “engaging,” Sonni Abatta is a player of the that caliber. She’s part of what I consider the *new media.

Q (J.F.): If given the opportunity to spend an all access week with the Pittsburgh Steelers or an afternoon w/ Bono at the Vatican City for a special viewing w/ the Pope, what would you choose?

A (S.A.):  No Comment.
